You don’t need an expensive kiln to become a clay master. We use air-dry clay which enables you to sculpt and dry your masterpiece at home.
Plant Pots
In order to make a plant pot, ensure that there is a small drainage hole in the middle of the base to allow any standing water to drain out. It is best to keep the plant in a plastic pot within your clay pot so that it can be removed when watering.
Vases
Due to the fact our clay is not entirely waterproof, we do not recommend using it to make vases. The clay is perfect for making dry flower vases.
Is it food safe e.g. mugs?
No, our clay is not food safe, therefore we do not recommend using it to make mugs or bowls etc.
Outside use?
We do not recommend using our clay outside, the weather will damage the clay.
Yes you can - you'll first need to take your piece for a 'bisque' firing to prepare it for glazing. Avoid applying the paint and sealant provided as this won't be allowed in the kiln.
Once your creation is bisque fired you can apply coloured glazes available online and in most pottery cafes. It will then need a final firing to complete the job.
The clay can be fired between 1000°C and 1260°C. Please make sure that the kiln is well vented (i.e. suitable extraction fan and canopy fitted allowing fumes to be safely removed from the kiln room).
To find a kiln we recommend reaching out to local pottery cafes and studios to ask if they will fire your pieces for a small fee.
The clay dries by itself when left alone for 24-48 hours. The drying time will vary depending on how thick the piece is.
Do not put your piece in the oven or apply heat to try to speed this process up because it will likely cause your masterpiece to crack.
No, our clay is not food safe, therefore we do not recommend using it to make mugs or bowls etc.
The clay lasts for 3-6 months in its original packaging. Should you wish to keep your kits longer than this or if you are only using some clay and would like to save some, we recommend wrapping it in cling film and storing it in an airtight container.
Sealing your clay will provide a splash proof protective layer, the only way to achieve a watertight finish would be to fire your clay in a kiln.
The clay is safe for pregnant women, as long as you don't eat it!
We generally say our kits are suitable for 8+ years, however with careful supervision the clay can be used with younger children.
The clay is very easy to clean off most non porous surfaces using a wet cloth.
Once the clay is bone dry, first apply your white paint. Once that is dry you can add any coloured paint decorations, followed by the sealant which is the final step.
You can buy acrylic paints on our website to use on our clay, you can choose between classic and pastel colours.
We recommend working on a non-porous surface that the clay will not get stuck to, that way you can wipe it down easily when you're finished.
Yes, you can make a candle from our clay. You can use a clay pot as a vessel to pour melted wax into or also use the clay as a candle holder! We advise not making a wax melt holder from the clay, likewise with enclosed tea light holders.
Extra safety tips:
-Ensure that the wick is centred at least 3 cm from the clay sides.
- We recommend not sealing the inside of the pot.
- Do not burn candle for longer than 4 hours at one time.
- Keep candle out of reach of pets and children.
- Stop burning the candle once there is only about 4 mm of wax at the bottom.
- Ensure the wick is not too high before burning, we advise trimming to about 5 mm before lighting.
- Place candle at least 10 cm from other candles and ensure it is placed on a stable, level surface.
